Plasma Televisions Deliver “Outstanding Performance”, Drive Growth of Digital Television Market
Plasma Display Coalition President Highlights “Power of Plasma” At DisplaySearch Flat-Panel Conference
SAN DIEGO, April 5, 2006 -- Sleek and sexy flat-panel plasma televisions, once a high-end product for the rich and famous, are now a mainstream category driving growth of the digital television business, according to James M. Palumbo, President of the Plasma Display Coalition. In presenting the “Power of Plasma” at the recent 2006 DisplaySearch Flat-Panel Conference, Palumbo stated that the category is expected to achieve an explosive 50 percent growth in unit sales in 2006, dovetailing with the growth of HDTV - benefiting consumers, retailers and manufacturers.
The Plasma Display Coalition was formed by leading plasma display manufacturers Hitachi Home Electronics, LG Electronics USA, Panasonic Corporation of America, Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. and Samsung Electronics USA to promote the growth of plasma TV in the U.S. and encourage the understanding and benefits and future potential of the product category.
As part of its mission to underscore the advantages and benefits of plasma television, which has become the large-screen choice for the centerpiece of the home entertainment system, the Plasma Display Coalition has joined forces with a leading display expert and independent researcher to conduct a wide range of evaluation tests.
Five plasma displays, one from each of the coalition members, were put through an extensive series of tests conducted in the laboratories of Roam Consulting. Palumbo previewed several of the test results at the conference that underscored plasma is the ideal large-screen high definition display for today’s home theater.
“We had these tests conducted to determine how plasma performed and simply put, the results showed that plasma technology delivers outstanding technical performance,” Palumbo said.
Image Retention: None of the sets showed residual images and that there was no significant phosphor degradation.
Horizontal and Vertical Viewing: All the sets provided a wide viewing angle (of 157.5 degrees) with minimal brightness degradation and no black level degradation.
Dynamic Resolution: supports that Plasma is the ideal television among the new categories for displaying and enjoying fast moving sports and movies scenes.
The Plasma Display Coalition plans to release results from additional tests in the coming months.
